Rapper, producer and one half of La Caution, Nikkfurie has built an independent body of work from Noisy-le-Sec. In 13 videos, he explains what made him last: an identity of his own, a label started out of necessity and a direct link with the people who really listen to him.
The beginnings
Mid-90s, in Noisy-le-Sec: Nikkfurie and his brother Hi-Tekk discover rap at the foot of the tower blocks, with friends who would become Les Cautionneurs. What brings them together is a love of lyricism and the wish for a musical identity of their own. Their first shows teach them the essential: go and find new ears, one concert after another.

A personal path
French and Moroccan, "noiséo-oujdis" as they say, Nikkfurie and Hi-Tekk turned their double culture into an artistic strength. Growing up in the banlieue in the 90s and 2000s, family and education run through their songs, from "Rétrospectives" to "Thé à la menthe". A story nobody else could tell.

A strong identity
Self-taught, Nikkfurie started by redoing what the producers he admired were doing. He learned one thing from it: imitation leads, at best, to a copy. So he decided to "make Nikkfurie music", mixing chaâbi, soul, funk, new wave and hip-hop without a filter. That mix gives La Caution a sound you recognise instantly.

The world of La Caution
Funk from the 93, science fiction, comics, philosophy: La Caution draws on its passions to tell its reality in strong images. A world, Nikkfurie explains, is when everything holds together: the sound, the image and the people you work with.

Independent art, independent label
Being independent means doing everything at once: studio, boxes, paperwork, promotion. Nikkfurie talks about the hustle, the broke periods and what this school taught him about every job that makes a record exist. And why passion stays the engine.

How an indie label starts
The label was not a choice but a necessity: La Caution's sound was too new to fit the major labels' boxes. With Mouloud Achour and David Dancre, they launched Kerozen Music, the big brother of their current label NCR2A, and learned to release their records on their own.

Kourtrajmé and music for the screen
A member of the Kourtrajmé collective in its early days, Nikkfurie composes for the screen. His version of "Thé à la menthe", written for a short film, ended up in Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Twelve". He tells how, and what it changed for the reach of his music.

The second album milestone
The double album "Peines de Maures / Arc-en-ciel pour daltoniens" is the cornerstone of La Caution. It was followed by a long tour where they met the community that loves their work. For an independent band and label, it was exactly what they needed.

Direct to Cautionneurs
A few thousand committed people are worth more than millions of strangers drawn by a buzz. As early as the 2000s, La Caution created a separate offer for its "Cautionneurs": signed tracks, exclusives, bootlegs. A direct circuit, long before the platforms.

Releasing a project
Before releasing a project, Nikkfurie asks himself a simple question: does it look like me, without calculation, and does it bring something? Then he sets a standard so that every track holds up, with different moods but a coherent whole.

The CD first, then digital, then merch: caps and goodies given with the record. Nikkfurie explains how one project becomes several creations, each with its own story, for the people who can understand it.

A message to a young artist
Stay true to your feelings. Create from what drives you, angers you or excites you, look for what makes you singular instead of imitating, and never give up: that is what gathers a circle of insiders, and what lets you live from your art.
